The Golden Calf Destroyed

Moses directs the destruction of the calf idol as armed men strike the image with axes and bring fire against its pedestal. The scene recalls Israel’s rebellion at Sinai, when the people turned from the covenant and worshiped the golden calf while Moses was on the mountain receiving the law. The broken weapons, ordered movement, and commanding gesture focus attention on the judgment of idolatry and the restoration of holy worship. In Exodus 32, Moses burns the calf, grinds it to powder, and confronts the people with the seriousness of replacing the living God with a handmade image. This artwork serves well for Bible teaching on covenant faithfulness, false worship, repentance, and the first commandments.
