Mephiboscheth 1

Mephibosheth, lame in his feet and leaning on a crutch, is seized by armored royal soldiers outside a doorway as he is brought from hiding into the presence of King David’s court. A spear-bearing guard watches from the foreground, while another soldier holds Mephibosheth firmly, emphasizing the fear and uncertainty surrounding his summons. The scene reflects the account in 2 Samuel 9, when David seeks a surviving member of Saul’s house for the sake of his covenant with Jonathan. Though Mephibosheth could have expected judgment as a descendant of a rival dynasty, David instead shows covenant mercy, restores Saul’s land to him, and gives him a place at the king’s table.
